Overview

This SmartMP3 add-on board can be used to easily add MP3 capabilities to your MikroElektronika PIC development board. The board is based on the VLSI Solutions VS1011e MPEG layer 3 audio decoder, which communicates with microcontrollers using the SPI serial bus and features digital to analog converter and earphone amplifier. The board also incorporates an SD/MMC card slot plus a voltage translator circuit allowing use with 5V as well as 3.3V development boards. Designed for use with MikroElektronika's PIC development and prototyping boards, although could also be interfaced to your own circuits and other development boards.

VS1011e MPEG Layer 3 Audio Decoder

The VLSI Solutions VS1011e is a single-chip solution for an MPEG layer 3 audio decoder. The chip contains a high performance low-power DSP processor (VS DSP), working memory, 4KB program RAM and 0.5KB data RAM for user applications, serial control and input data interfaces, and a high-quality oversampling variable-sample-rate stereo DAC, followed by an earphone amplifier and ground buffer. The VS1011e receives its input bitstream through a serial input bus, which it listens to as a system slave. The input stream is decoded and passed through an analog/digital hybrid volume control to an 18-bit oversampling multi-bit sigma-delta DAC. The decoding is controlled via the serial control bus. In addition to the basic decoding, it is possible to add application specific features, like DSP effects, to the user RAM memory.
