Compact & Powerful Wi-Fi SoC Module for IoT Applications

The ESP-12E is a widely used SMD Wi-Fi module built around the ESP8266 SoC, featuring an integrated PCB antenna, 4MB flash memory, and a full set of GPIO pins. It is the core module used in popular development boards like NodeMCU and Wemos D1 Mini, and is ideal for custom PCB designs requiring embedded Wi-Fi connectivity.

Key Specifications

  • CPU: ESP8266 32-bit Tensilica L106, up to 80/160 MHz
  • Flash: 4MB SPI Flash (onboard)
  • Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz), STA / AP / STA+AP modes
  • GPIO: 11 usable GPIOs (GPIO0–GPIO15, excluding strapping pins)
  • Interfaces: SPI, I2C, I2S, UART, ADC (1 channel, 10-bit)
  • Operating Voltage: 3.3V (not 5V tolerant)
  • Package: SMD castellated module, 2mm pitch
  • Antenna: Integrated PCB antenna
  • Dimensions: ~24mm × 16mm

Improvements Over ESP-07 / ESP-01

  • More GPIO pins exposed compared to ESP-01
  • 4MB flash vs 1MB on older modules
  • Metal shielding for reduced RF interference
  • Castellated pads for reliable SMD soldering

Compatible Firmware

  • Arduino IDE (ESP8266 board package)
  • MicroPython
  • NodeMCU Lua firmware
  • AT command firmware (Espressif default)
  • ESP-IDF

Ideal For

Custom PCB Wi-Fi designs, IoT sensors, home automation nodes, smart plugs, remote monitoring, and any embedded application requiring compact wireless connectivity.

Note: This is a bare SMD module requiring soldering or an adapter board for breadboard use. Operating voltage is 3.3V — do not connect directly to 5V logic without level shifting.
